1st June

Each June celebrates LGBT+ communities all around the world to recognise people coming together in love and friendship. The month of June was chosen to mark the Stonewall Riots that took place in June 1969, which inspired others to fight for equality and saw the first Pride festival officially taking place in the UK in 1972.

As well as being a month long celebration, it’s also an opportunity to raise awareness of current issues and learn about the history of the community.

While the month is usually celebrated with lots of parades and marches, with social distancing still in place things will be a little different again this year. At Alcumus, we’ll be marking Pride Month in a number of ways:

  • Share team stories and experiences of what it means to be part of the LGBT+ community, or experiences with friends and family. We hope that by sharing, together we can become more aware of the issues facing the community and support each other to make working at Alcumus even more inclusive.
  • Throughout June, we’ve changed the Alcumus logo to incorporate the colours of the Progress Pride Flag to show our support to the LGBT+ community. The new Pride Progress flag is a reinvention of the traditional rainbow flag, which has been updated to be more inclusive of the community. The white, pink, and light blue reflect the colours of the transgender flag, while the brown and black stripes represent ethnicity and those lost to AIDS.
  • We’ll also be sharing learning resources where our team can find out more about LGBT+ history, raise awareness of issues affecting the community and what it means to people in the workplace.

Whatever our identity, we place positive value on empowering our people by respecting and appreciating each individual, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, or nationality. We take huge pride in all our people, which means creating a safe, positive, and nurturing environment so that everyone has a sense of belonging.
