Can you tell me a little of ENGIE’s background with Info Exchange?

We’ve worked with Info Exchange for around four years. Our first system was known as SPARK, which went live in 2016 when we were operating as Keepmoat, prior to ENGIE’s acquisition of the company in 2017. ENGIE UK & Ireland also had an Info Exchange platform called CID, which was in operation from 2015. The decision was made after the acquisition of Keepmoat to build a new Info Exchange platform known as AIMS, on which we use a number of modules to manage our Health, Safety and Environmental compliance.

As an energy provider, clearly measuring your carbon footprint is of great importance. Can you tell us a bit about how you did this before you implemented Info Exchange?

Prior to the Carbon app, we used an internal system on SharePoint. Uploading of data and exporting into tables was poor – while the reporting features on the system were adequate, there was limited ability to work with the values and export in various formats as required.

Our waste information was completed via a spreadsheet. It was a challenging process, requiring significant time operationally and centrally within the Environment team to combine the data and produce meaningful reports.

So how do you now report through Info Exchange?

We have two dedicated environmental applications allowing the reporting of Carbon and Waste data. We also benefit from the use of other apps on our AIMS platform, including our Visits and Audit apps which are also used by the wider business. The Carbon & Waste apps are unusually complex, with over 1,000 entries logged a month supported by significant calculations.

Our new carbon app went live two months ago. Primarily it’s used for our utilities and fleet emissions and our operational carbon emissions, such as scopes 1 and 2. We can report our carbon intensity, allowing us to compare different areas of the business. For example, a van driving 200 miles a day will be emitting higher emissions than a site manager living close by to a small construction site.

The carbon app supports 3 KPIs in our annual report – measuring scopes 1 and 2 and allows us to capture scope 3 and water consumption. The system gives us a holistic view.

We focus heavily on reducing both our carbon footprint and our emissions. We have introduced our Fugitive Emissions as a new emissions source. This covers leaks of coolant gases with high global warming potentials, for example from air conditioning units. This change and others made possible by Info Exchange have allowed us to continue to expand the coverage of our carbon footprint accounting.

Our waste app went live at the same time and supports 2 KPIs. One is waste generated, the second is a new KPI, focusing on the percentage of waste that’s reused or recycled. It also includes a Waste Management Plan section, which uses Info Exchange’s notification abilities to flag contracts expected to produce unusually high amounts of waste for the central Environment team to investigate further.

What benefits have you seen since implementation?

We’ve seen a huge reduction in administration time, particularly with our waste application. We have 1,400 sites, and every site manager has access to their relevant areas of the system. Therefore, we had to ensure that when we built these applications, there was a centralised reporting function.

Last year for the first time we successfully achieved Carbon Trust carbon and waste standards, which demonstrate strong management and reductions in waste and carbon. Info Exchange was influential in this achievement.

Overall, we now have the time to analyse data and work towards more reductions.

How are you being affected by the SECR?

Luckily for us, the new legislation won’t alter much of how we’re operating, as we’re already working towards reducing our footprint and emissions. From a reporting perspective, because we already capture our environmental information within Info Exchange, reporting shouldn’t be too difficult for us.

Do you have plans to continue reducing your carbon footprint and lowering emissions?

We’re currently working on a clear reduction strategy including setting a new Science Based Target by the end of 2019. This is supported by existing targets including the adoption of 20% electric vehicles by 2020, and a Zero Diesel goal by 2025. We’ll collect this fleet data on our carbon app and measure the impact of that change on the system. AIMS will be integral in managing these policies.
