693,000 workers sustained a non-fatal injury in 2019/20, an 18% increase from the previous year (HSE). Now more than ever, it is paramount to understand the fundamentals of health and safety to keep staff safe and achieve business compliance.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health – or COSHH as most people refer to it – is the primary set of regulations in the UK that govern the use of hazardous substances in the workplace. By law, COSHH requires employers to conduct a formal risk assessment for any exposure to a hazardous substance that could occur in conjunction with their work.
Supply Chain Management
For many businesses, supply chain management can be a challenge, dealing with multiple contracts and approval processes day to day. Risk has always been part of the supply chain and alongside the more traditional and longer-recognised supplier risks, new threats like COVID-19 have exposed the vulnerabilities of many organisations and the disruption to global supply chains.
Nobody goes to work to get injured, however despite employers’ best efforts to prevent workplace accidents and incidents employees can, unfortunately, be injured or killed at work. In 2019/2020, figures released by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) show that 700,000 workers sustained injuries, 111 fatally.
Employers are legally obliged to record and report specific injuries, illnesses and incidents to comply with accident reporting regulations, which are more commonly known as RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013).
Quality Management - ISO 9001
Having an effective quality management system and certification to the ISO 9001 standard is one of the best ways of reassuring potential customers and clients that you can meet and possibly exceed expectations. It defines your commitment to creating products and services in accordance with pre-defined standards and in some industries, certification is legally required or often mandatory during the tendering process for work with larger organisations or the public sector.
Being ISO 9001 certified demonstrates that you’re compliant with proven international business practices and helps get you on ‘preferred supplier’ lists, as well as making sure that your customers are happier and more likely to stay with you.
Environmental Management - ISO 14001
When it comes to the environment organisations are increasing being asked to demonstrate their approach to carbon reduction, sustainable use of resources, waste reduction and recycling, pollution prevention control and protection of healthy ecosystems.
With certification to the ISO 14001 standard – the international standard for environmental management – you can put in place an environmental policy and objectives that take into account relevant legal and other requirements and supports your efforts to limit your environmental impact.
Occupational Health and Safety Management - ISO 45001
More than 30 million days are lost each year due to work-related illness and injuries suffered in UK workplaces. Managing the health, safety and wellbeing of workers is not only a legal and moral duty, it makes business sense too.
Senior managers are now held personally responsible for health and safety in their organisations. In addition, new sentencing guidelines introduced in 2016 have resulted in harsher punishment for failures. One of the most effective ways of exercising managerial control over not just the wellbeing of your workers, but everyone affected by your organisation’s activities is being certified to ISO 45001 standard.
