What is ISO 45001?
ISO 45001:2018 is the international standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS). It has replaced OHSAS 18001.
By implementing the standard you can protect the health, safety and wellbeing of your employees, visitors and anyone affected by your organisation’s activities. It’s also an excellent way to establish legal compliance.
Putting an occupational health and safety management system in place is more important than ever. Senior managers are now held personally responsible for health and safety in their organisations. In addition, new sentencing guidelines introduced in 2016 have resulted in harsher punishment for failures. The standard provides protection for you, your employees and your organisation. It’s the best way of managing risk, avoiding fines and reducing employee absence. It all adds up to better business performance.
If you already have other management systems in place, then putting an additional one in place can be straightforward. The standard is based on the Annex SL framework, meaning it shares a common structure and many elements with the other major standards. So, it integrates seamlessly with other ISO management systems including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 27001.

Not all ISO certificates are equal. You need to make sure your certificate is issued by a body that has been accredited by the government-recognised United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

ISO 45001 is relevant to ANY sector and to any business of any size. It also works alongside any existing ISO certification you may already have, such as ISO 9001. In fact, if you already have one ISO standard, implementation and maintenance of additional standards will be easier.
The HSWA of 1974 doesn’t help you improve your compliance or performance. It is simply a law that states what your legal duties are as an employer towards your employees and to anyone else affected by your organisation’s activities. You have to abide by this law.
