Alcumus, through our team at SafeContractor, is proud to have supported the charity Surfability to transform its current space and create a new surf centre. The project, featuring on the BBC One series: ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ as part of Children in Need airing on 12 November, has turbo-charged Surfability’s mission to make surfing accessible to everyone.
Volunteers are vital for Surfability to keep surfing accessible for all. Likewise, DIY SOS is reliant on the support and kindness of the local community; from neighbours, tradespeople, and suppliers to donate their time, skills and products to volunteer. However, 16% of people in the UK have never thought about volunteering, 11% do not know groups that need help and 10% cannot find or are not aware of the volunteering opportunities available to them1.
The barriers to volunteering made it so important for the team at Alcumus to help source approved tradespeople and volunteers for ‘The Big Build’ project undertaken by BBC One’s ‘DIY SOS’. The project transformed Surfability’s current space from a disused bus shelter to a fully functioning suit and surfboard storage unit. In addition, the volunteering team built a new Surf Centre that will support inclusive surfing opportunities for those with disabilities across the UK. We’re proud of all the volunteers who took part in this life-changing transformation.
