BJF Group is a construction and building services company providing everything from conception through to building maintenance. They have as many as 25 live project sites across the UK.
Based in Maidstone, Kent and with a workforce of over 130, they aspire to continue to grow the business in a compliant, safe and sustainable way. As Don Urquhart, Head of SHEQ succinctly puts it: “We want to ensure that our people and those that we engage with go home safe every night.”
Don and the SHEQ team is responsible for all aspects of the company compliance systems including the BJF Integrated Management System which incorporates all of their ISO certifications - ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. In fact, they secured certification for them all at the same time.

“The motivation for getting all three was to allow BJF to demonstrate our commitment to health, safety, quality and the environment and thereby expand the business by securing more significant contracts with larger clients,” explains Don. “It’s an invaluable point of differentiation helping greatly with tenders. Many clients have an expectation that a contractor will have these certifications, so it was a necessity to enable our growth.”
BJF has also come to appreciate the other benefits of these management systems. “Our internal processes have been greatly enhanced through the introduction of ISO standards and clients have acknowledged these improvements through awarding larger contracts to BJF,” adds Don.
With three systems to manage, it could become a challenge, but BJF have risen to it. “The introduction of the BJF Integrated Management System (IMS) evolved in the process of applying for our three ISO standards,” says Don. “Instead of individual applications for each, the three standards were cross-referenced, introduced to the business through the Integrated Management System, practiced, evidence recorded and then the standards were applied for, audited and certified.”
The BJF IMS was created internally through a process led by the SHEQ team. This allows for the organic growth of the system, promotes internal adoption by all and ensures continued development as the company grows.
Implementation was made easier because there was real commitment from top management. “Our MD was the driving force and really believed in what we were doing,” explains Don. “Having buy-in from the top down was invaluable in making implementation as streamlined as possible.”
